Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam 15 October 1931 – 27 July 2015) was an Indian aerospace scientist who served as the 11th president of India from 2002 to 2007. He was born and raised in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu and studied physics and aerospace engineering. He spent the next four decades as a scientist and science administrator, mainly at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and was intimately involved in India's civilian space programme and military missile development efforts.[1] He thus came to be known as the Missile Man of India for his work on the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology.[2][3][4] He also played a pivotal organisational, technical, and political role in India's Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998, the first since the original nuclear test by India in 1974. His father, Jainulabdeen, was a boat owner, and his mother, Ashiamma, was a homemaker. Though financially constrained, his family imbued him with values of honesty, discipline, and hard work. Young Kalam was bright and inquisitive. He sold newspapers as a child to support his family while pursuing his education. He was fascinated by flying and aerodynamics, which later inspired his career in aerospace science. --- Education Kalam attended Schwartz High School in Ramanathapuram and later graduated in Physics from St. Joseph's College, Tiruchirappalli. His passion for aeronautics led him to pursue a degree in Aerospace Engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology (MIT). --- Career as a Scientist Kalam began his career in 1960 at the Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), where he worked on a hovercraft project. However, his major contributions were at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), where he joined in 1969. Contributions to ISRO Played a pivotal role in developing India's first satellite launch vehicle, SLV-3, which successfully deployed the Rohini satellite in 1980. Known for his leadership and technical acumen, he made significant advancements in India’s space program. Work in Missile Technology Kalam returned to DRDO and became the chief architect of India’s missile program. He was instrumental in the development of: Agni: A long-range ballistic missile. Prithvi: A surface-to-surface short-range missile.
